The apprenticeship is a comprehensive training programme lasting 2 years. During this period, you will undertake training and work experience at Dounreay within project teams, assisting with some of our new build projects on contracting and estimating works and project management support. You will also attend Inverness Highland College UHI on block release to gain additional skills and qualifications.
The programme requires you to complete SVQ3 Construction Contracting Operations: Estimating and HNC Built Environment
The training and qualifications you will gain are highly valued in modern industry. Employment at Dounreay on completion of the programme is dependent on the site’s requirements at the time and your performance.
You should:
- Have achieved (or expect to achieve) a minimum of Mathematics, English and a Technical subject at National 5
- Be able to demonstrate an interest in the built environment
- Live within daily travelling distance of Dounreay or willing to relocate

Job Purpose: The Construction Apprenticeship will provide an exciting alternative to full-time education and an opportunity to gain valuable work experience, skills and qualifications in a particular trade. Apprentices will not only learn basic skills but will be given the opportunity to gain more responsibility and put new skills into practice.

Year 2 – 80% of HC05 = £18,439.61, £9.58 p/h

John Gunn & Sons Ltd. are a long-established company based in Caithness, Scotland, who specialise in civil engineering operations, quarry supplies and services, property development and plant hire.
Job Description
This Apprenticeship includes in house training alongside completion of a HNC course in Civil Engineering at UHI Inverness on block release.
As an apprentice engineer you will be involved in a vast majority of projects including various setting out / surveying operations, preparation of drawings, health, safety, and environmental paperwork, measuring of material quantities and quarry materials testing.
Requirements
- Someone who is enthusiastic and willing to learn.
- Someone who can work as part of a team and as an individual.
- Good communications skills and able to build working relationships.
- Be self-motivated.
- National 5 in Maths and English.
Desirable (but not essential)
- Full UK Driving licence
- Higher grade C or above in Maths (alternative access routes to college available if the applicant does not hold a grade C in Higher Maths)
- A working knowledge of AutoCAD.
- A working knowledge of Microsoft software such as Word, Excel & Microsoft project.
