Construction apprenticeships
- Carpentry and joinery (1 post) – 4-year programme
- Scaffolding (1 post) – 2-year programme
When applying for a construction apprenticeship you will be considered for both positions unless you state in the additional information section of the application form that you only wish to apply for 1 of them.
Carpentry and joinery
The apprenticeship is a comprehensive training programme lasting up to 4 years. During this time, you will undertake training and work experience at Dounreay with our estate services team and attend UHI North, West & Hebrides on block release to gain additional skills and qualifications.
The programme requires you to complete SCQF Level 6 Carpentry and Joinery and a Professional Development Award at Level 5.
Scaffolding
The apprenticeship is a comprehensive training programme lasting up to 2 years. During this period, you will undertake training and work experience at Dounreay with our estate services team and attend additional CITB training in Glasgow on block release to achieve required qualifications.
The programme requires you to complete SCQF Level 5 Accessing Operations and Rigging
These apprenticeships provide unique and challenging opportunities. The people we train today will have the opportunity to be involved in some of the most exciting technical projects in the world and to develop skills which will be increasingly needed both at Dounreay and in other areas of industry.
Candidates should have:
- Achieved National 4 or equivalent, in mathematics and a technical subject
- Good communication, team working and problem-solving skills
- Be able to demonstrate practical skills

Quantity Surveying/Commercial Analyst Apprenticeships

This programme provides unique and challenging opportunities. The people we train today will have the opportunity to be involved in some of the most exciting technical projects in the world and to develop skills which will be increasingly needed both at Dounreay and in other areas of industry.
The apprenticeship is a comprehensive training programme lasting up to two years. During this period, you will undertake training and work experience at Dounreay within our Commercial and Project Teams, assisting with some of our new build projects on contracting and estimating works and project support. You will also attend UHI Inverness College on block release to gain additional skills and qualifications.
The programme requires you to complete SCQF Level 6 Construction Contracting Operations: Estimating and HNC Built Environment
The training & qualifications you will gain are highly valued in modern industry; employment with NRS Dounreay on completion of the programme is dependent on Dounreay site requirements at the time and your performance.
You should:
- Have achieved (or expect to achieve) a minimum of Mathematics, English at National 5
- Demonstrate an interest in the built environment
- Have good attention to detail
- Good communication and team working skills
