Forestry and Land Scotland are currently recruiting for Wildlife Ranger apprentices.

Wildlife Rangers provide a crucial function in caring for Scotland’s national forests and land. From protecting young forests to helping restore habitats and species, this role, more than any other, puts you in touch with the lands we manage.

We need people with a passion for working outdoors, and who want a role where no two days are the same. This role is on the front line of preserving and enhancing Scotland’s forests and habitats so they can be a home to our iconic wildlife and enjoyed by visitors for years to come.

If this sounds like you, the Wildlife Apprentice post may be just what you’re looking for.

What you will do

You’ll work in a supported learning environment alongside the Wildlife Ranger teams and other departments within FLS developing the relevant knowledge and skills required to complete the Wildlife Ranger Modern Apprenticeship. You’ll work towards your qualifications whilst getting practical experience and supporting FLS to manage its wildlife, forests and land.

In year one you will complete the Game and Wildlife Management MA at SCQF level 5 – Deer pathway at SVQ level 2. To attain the qualification you will complete ten units in total: seven mandatory and three optional units. As well as the SVQ, you will complete some additional training courses (enhancements): All-Terrain Vehicle Handling, Emergency First Aid, Health & Safety at Work and Deer Stalking Certificates 1 and 2 for example.

On successful completion of the Game and Wildlife Management MA you will progress onto the Trees and Timber MA at SCQF level 6 – General Woodland and Forestry Treework at SVQ level 3 in year two. To attain the qualification you will complete ten units in total: three mandatory and seven optional units. As well as the SVQ, you will complete some additional training courses (enhancements): Brushwood Chipper and Safe Use of Pesticides for example.

The majority of the enhancements for both MA’s will be delivered on the college campus over a period of days. The MA’s will be delivered in the workplace and you will be allocated your own personal college assessor who will make regular assessment visits to ensure you are working to a competent level. You will work alongside an experienced Wildlife Ranger and / or Forester on a daily basis to learn and develop your skills.
