Opportunities at CMS

Here at CMS, we believe that a career in law should be accessible to all. Therefore, we are delighted to be launching two programmes for S5 students; CMS Law Scholarships and CMS Connect (work experience). These programmes are designed to help students discover a career in Law.

CMS Opportunities – What’s the difference?

CMS Law Scholarships

What
• £2,500 per year of your university degree
• Work experience in your first year of university
• Mentoring support for UCAS applications
Who
• S5 students
• Students who know they want to go to University
• Who are interested in a career in law

CMS Connect

What
• Sustained programme of support throughout S5 – S6
• Paid work experience 7 – 11 August 2023
• Mentoring support and application skills workshops
Who
• S5 heading into S6
• Students who are interested in a legal career
• Who are open to Solicitor Apprenticeships or University

Key Application information

As a S5 student, you can apply to both the CMS Law Scholarship and / or CMS Connect (work experience).
Please note that the programmes have slightly different eligibility criteria, application processes and deadlines. Notably, if you are applying to the CMS Law Scholarship programme, you must submit a written essay.

Law Scholarships

Who can apply?

• You’re in S5*((*The scheme is also open to any S6 students in Scotland who do not yet
have a place at university confirmed)
• You attend a state funded school, sixth form or further education college
• Your parents and grandparents did not attend university
• You intend to apply to study a LLB Law degree at university through the 2023/2024 UCAS process
• You are passionate about pursuing a career in law
• You have not been convicted of a criminal offence
• You are not related to any partner of CMS

You also meet one of the following criteria:
• You are, or have been at any time between ages 11 and 16, eligible for free school meals. meals.(Or would be eligible if you attended a School Sixth Form.)
• Your school from years 7 11 has 20% or more students eligible for free school meals.
• You are, or have been, a child looked after/care experienced
• Your home address is in POLAR4 quintile 1

Law Scholarships

How do I apply?

To be considered for a scholarship, you will need to enter our essay writing competition which closes 30 June 2023.
The essay questions to choose from this year are:
1. “Not everyone should have the right to strike.” Do you agree?
2. “Deepfakes are a crime and there should be legal consequences.” Do you agree?
Essays must be between 750 and 1000 words.

CMS Connect (work experience)

Who can apply?

1.You’re in S5
2. At a state school
3. You must also meet one or more of the following:
• You are currently in receipt of, or have previously received, free school meals, Pupil Premium, Education Maintenance Allowance and/or 16 to 19 Bursary
• You grew up in a household where no parent or guardian attended university
• You have been, or are currently, in local authority care (for a period of 3 months or longer)
• You are, or have been, a full time or part time carer
• You came to the UK as a refugee or asylum seeker
• You are attending a state school or college with:
a) below average A Level or Higher point score and/or
b) low rate of progression to higher education.
PRIME Work Experience School Eligibility Criteria
• Note: young people who meet the local authority care criterion do not need to meet any other criterion.

How do I apply?
Applications open 24 April and close 9 June.
