Trainee Opportunity: Accountant – Thor Accountancy, Thurso

• Monday – Thursday, 32 hours per week
• Location: Thurso, Office based (initially)

Due to continued growth, an opportunity has arisen in our Thurso office to offer a school, college leaver or graduate an AAT training package with full study support towards achieving the qualification. The individual should be ambitious, hardworking and self-motivated. Excellent communication skills are important for the variety of client contact that will be faced.


We will cover the costs of your professional exams including course materials, tuition fees and exam costs. Following completion of the AAT training contract, there will be the opportunity to further progress on to the ACCA professional qualification to become a fully qualified chartered certified accountant should you wish to.


You will be able to put your knowledge into practice as you will have diversity within your role, assisting our team with a variety of clients where you will receive support to continuously improve your skills. You will be given the opportunity to work with clients in various industries and sectors.


As you develop, you will be given further responsibilities along the way including managing a small portfolio of clients. You will receive regular internal team training and you will be given time to ensure that you keep up to date with the latest changes in accounting and technology. You will be part of an organisation that is always looking for a more efficient way of working, innovating, and challenging the way that we do things. Your ideas will always be encouraged and valued. We love technology and are always keeping up to date with new software to help both us and our clients.

Experience gained over the course of the training contract would include:

  • Bookkeeping
  • VAT return preparation
  • Management accounts preparation
  • Preparation of financial statements
  • Personal and corporation tax compliance
  • Exposure to relevant accounting software programs
  • Supporting the director and other team members in client work and management

What do we need our Trainee Accountant to be?

  • Willing to learn and obtain practical on the job experience to support your studies
  • Confident with learning our accounting software and enjoy adopting new technology and processes
  • A passion for numbers and problem solving
  • Ability to demonstrate good verbal and written communication
  • Good time management/organisation with the ability to maintain a good work-life-study balance to meet required deadlines
  • Willingness to contribute to Team Thor and to help the growth of the company
  • Some travel to clients may be required from time to time
  • Office based (initially) – Monday to Thursday – 8.30am to 4.30pm (every Friday off!)
